How to Craft an ATS CV

Creating an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) friendly CV is crucial because many companies use these systems to screen resumes before they ever reach human eyes.

Here’s how to optimize your CV for ATS:

1. Use Standard Formatting:
-Headers: Use clear headers like “Work Experience,” “Education,” “Skills.”
-Fonts: Stick to professional fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman. Avoid overly stylized fonts.
-Bullet Points: Use simple bullet points for listing items, not fancy symbols.

2. Tailor Your CV with Keywords:
-Job Description: Mirror the language from the job posting. If the job description mentions “project management,” ensure your CV includes this term if applicable.
-Hard Skills: Include specific skills like “Python,” “SEO,” etc., especially if they’re mentioned in the job ad.

3. Simple Layout:
– Avoid: Graphics, images, charts, or tables as ATS might not read them correctly.
-Columns: Use a single-column format. Multiple columns can confuse ATS.

4. File Type:
– Submit in .pdf file format
– pdf keeps your formatting intact.
– Check the application instructions

5. Contact Information:
– Simple and Clear: Just your name, phone number, email, and perhaps LinkedIn profile or personal website if relevant.
– No need for address unless requested.

6. Work Experience:
– Format:
Job Title
Company Name | City, County
Month Year – Month Year
– Description using action verbs like “Managed,” “Developed,” “Led.”
– Quantify Achievements: Use numbers where possible, e.g., “Increased sales by 20% over one year.”

7. Education:
-Standard Format:
Degree Name
University Name, Location
Graduation Year

8. Skills Section:
– List Relevant Skills: Only include skills that are relevant to the job.
– Group them if necessary (e.g., Technical Skills, Soft Skills).

9. Avoid:
– Headers and Footers: Sometimes ATS can miss information here.
– Abbreviations: Spell out terms at least once (e.g., “Search Engine Optimization (SEO)”) before using abbreviations.

10. Spelling and Grammar:
– Check: Even though ATS focuses on keywords, spelling errors can still cause issues or might be noticed if your resume passes to a human reviewer.

11. Customize Each Application:
– Don’t Use a One-Size-Fits-All: Tailor your CV for each job application.
– This might mean slight adjustments in how you present your experience or which skills you highlight.

12. Test Your Resume:
– ATS Simulators: There are online tools where you can upload your resume to see how an ATS might read it.
– This can give you an idea of what might need adjusting.

Takeaway :

Your CV should still be readable and appealing to human eyes because, ultimately, it’s humans who make the hiring decision.

Balancing ATS optimization with a clear, professional presentation is key.
