With the application deadline set for 04 June 2025 at 12:00 PM EAT, candidates have a limited window to prepare a compelling application that meets all eligibility and format requirements, particularly the use of the Europass CV format. In this article, we’ll explore the details of the traineeship and offer practical advice on how to craft an impressive Europass CV that aligns with the expectations of the EU Delegation.

About the Traineeship

This is a 6-month, full-time traineeship beginning in October 2025. The position is hosted at the EU Delegation to Kenya and falls under the Political, Press and Information Section. The selected trainee will work closely with diplomatic and communications professionals, gaining unique insights into EU foreign policy implementation, political reporting, and public diplomacy in Kenya.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Monitoring and analyzing Kenyan political developments.
  • Supporting media relations and engagement.
  • Updating the Delegation’s website and social media platforms.
  • Designing and producing communications materials.
  • Compiling press reviews and supporting meeting logistics.
  • Drafting reports and contributing to strategic communication initiatives.

The role offers more than clerical support—it demands active participation, research capabilities, media acumen, and an understanding of EU policies, especially those related to Africa.

Who Should Apply?

Ideal candidates are:

  • University graduates in international relations, political science, journalism, media, trade, or related disciplines.
  • Possessing excellent English communication and writing skills.
  • Able to demonstrate strong research, analysis, and drafting skills.
  • Knowledgeable about EU foreign policy priorities, particularly concerning Africa.
  • Comfortable using digital communication tools and social media.
  • Team-oriented, proactive, and motivated to learn in a diplomatic environment.

Importantly, candidates must be eligible under Article 8 of the Decision ADMIN(2017)28, governing the rules of paid traineeships in EU Delegations.

Application Process

To apply, candidates must email the following documents to eeasjobs-083@eeas.europa.eu with the subject line:

Funded Traineeship – Political, Press and Information Section

Documents required:

  1. A Europass CV (standard format only; other formats will be disqualified).
  2. A cover letter explaining your motivation for applying.
  3. A completed application form (details provided on the EU External Action website).

Applicants are strongly advised to review the full eligibility criteria and guidelines on the EU’s official traineeship site before submitting their applications.

Tips for Writing an Effective Europass CV

The Europass CV is a standardized document format widely used by EU institutions. It ensures uniformity and clarity across all applications, making it easier for recruiters to assess candidates objectively. However, many applicants underestimate the effort required to tailor this seemingly simple format effectively.

1. Start with the Europass Platform

Begin by creating your CV using the official online editor at europass.eu. This tool provides a step-by-step process to guide you through the structure. Once completed, export the CV as a PDF and review it thoroughly before submitting.

2. Write a Clear Personal Statement

The “Personal Information” section should include accurate contact details and a professional tone. The “Summary” or “Profile” section is your personal pitch—briefly state your background, key strengths, and career goals. Tailor this specifically to reflect your interest in EU affairs, African diplomacy, or media engagement.

Example:

“Recent graduate in Political Science with a keen interest in EU-Africa diplomatic relations and digital public diplomacy. Strong research and writing skills, with hands-on experience in media analysis and policy brief drafting. Motivated to contribute to the EU Delegation’s strategic communications and political outreach in Kenya.”

3. Tailor Work Experience to the Role

Even if your experience is limited, highlight relevant internships, research roles, or volunteer work. Use bullet points to describe tasks and achievements, especially those involving:

  • Political analysis or reporting.
  • Social media or content creation.
  • Event support or public speaking.
  • Research on African political or economic issues.

Use action verbs such as “drafted,” “organized,” “researched,” “engaged with,” and quantify your achievements where possible.

4. Emphasize Education and Relevant Coursework

Under the “Education and Training” section, list your academic credentials. Mention thesis titles, special projects, or modules relevant to EU foreign policy, African affairs, or media.

Example:

BA in International Relations – University of Nairobi (2020–2024)
Dissertation: “The Role of the European Union in Mediating Electoral Reforms in East Africa”

5. Highlight Skills That Match the Job

Use the “Skills” section to align with the job description. Prioritize:

  • Language skills (especially fluency in English).
  • Digital tools (social media platforms, web CMS, graphic design software).
  • Research and writing competencies.
  • Communication and teamwork.

The Europass format allows you to rate language and digital skills, but keep your assessments honest and consistent.

6. Include Extracurricular and Volunteer Work

EU recruiters appreciate well-rounded candidates. Include student leadership roles, volunteering with NGOs, journalism activities, or any participation in Model UN or debate forums.

7. Proofread and Format for Clarity

Although the Europass format limits creative design, presentation still matters. Ensure:

  • Correct grammar and punctuation.
  • Professional language.
  • No inconsistencies in dates or formatting.

Have someone else review your CV before submission.

Preparation is Key

This traineeship is more than an internship; it’s a stepping stone into the world of EU diplomacy, offering young professionals a chance to contribute meaningfully to one of the EU’s most strategically important foreign missions in Africa. The experience promises not only professional exposure but also the opportunity to network, learn, and contribute to real-world policy and media engagements.

Make your application count by:

  • Carefully following all instructions.
  • Submitting all documents on time.
  • Investing the necessary effort into crafting a clear, relevant, and compelling Europass CV.

As the deadline approaches, time management and attention to detail will make all the difference. Good luck to all applicants—and remember, every well-prepared application is a reflection of your potential as a future diplomat or international communicator.
